- W1978460097 abstract "The micellar solubilization of cholesteryl stearate, oleate, linoleate, and linolenate by a representative nonionic surfactant, nonoxynol 10, was investigated at different temperatures. Nonoxynol 10 is an effective solubilizing agent. A crucial factor in determining solubilization limits is the physical state of the esters at the temperature of measurement. Below the melting points, the solubilization limits increased gradually with temperature. They doubled or tripled at the respective melting points, where the esters changed to smectic liquid crystals. Subsequent transitions to cholesteric liquid crystals and to isotropic melts were accompanied by significant increases in the temperature coefficient of the solubilization limits which were, however, much smaller than the increases which occurred at the melting points. At body temperature, cholesteryl stearate and oleate are crystalline solids. The linoleate changes from a smectic to a cholesteric mesophase at 37°C while the linolenate is a cholesteric mesophase. Therefore, cholesteryl stearate and oleate underwent far less extensive micellar solubilization at body temperature than cholesteryl linoleate and linolenate. By analogy, the polyunsaturated esters may also be much more soluble in lipoproteins at 37°C than the monounsaturated and saturated esters and are, therefore, less prone to form atherosclerotic deposits. When cholesteryl oleate, linoleate, and linolenate were compared at absolute temperatures 1% below their melting points, each additional double bond increased the solubilization limit by 57%. At absolute temperatures corresponding to 3.8% above their melting points, these esters are isotropic liquids. Under those conditions, each additional double bond increased the solubilization limit by 9%." @default.
