- W1978480835 abstract "After acute poisoning of rats by organophosphate insecticides there is an increase in the activities of hepatic alkaline phosphatase and tyrosine-α-ketoglutarate transaminase. These effects are mediated by the adrenals and resemble those produced by injection of glucocorticoids and exposure to toxic irritants. Maximum effects on liver enzymes occur several hours after the maximum cholinesterase depression produced by a single dose of a short-acting organophosphate such as Dipterex. Delnav has a more prolonged anticholinesterase action and also produced a greater and more prolonged elevation of hepatic alkaline phosphatase and tyrosine transaminase activities. The physiological significance of the effect of organophosphates on adaptive liver enzymes is not apparent from this study. However, the findings support the hypothesis that poisoning by chemicals in the environment may produce metabolic alterations that are mediated through the pituitary-adrenal system, and occur in tissues remote from the primary sites of toxic action. It seems possible that these subtle metabolic effects may contribute to the occurrence of signs and symptoms that are not readily explained by the better known mechanisms of action of these substances." @default.
