- W1978526192 abstract "We determined the relationship between serum and liver tissue HCV-RNA levels in 59 patients with chronic hepatitis C. Using branched DNA (bDNA) signal amplification assay, a newly developed sandwich nucleic acid assay for quantitation of HCV-RNA without target amplification, we were able to detect HCV-RNA in 47 (79.7%) serum samples at levels ranging from 0.562 to 851 meq/ml (median = 20.9 meq/ml). In contrast, quantification of HCV-RNA of liver tissues of 49 (83.1%) patients showed significantly higher levels ranging from 35.8 to 36 300 meq/g (median = 1990 meq/g). There was a strong correlation between HCV-RNA levels in 47 paired serum and liver tissue (R = 0.888). Our results indicate that serum HCV-RNA levels could only be regarded as a representative indicator of the total HCV-RNA level, and that hepatic HCV-RNA levels are extremely high compared with those in the serum." @default.
