- W1978539695 abstract "Electronic characteristics extracted from I-V curves obtained in a molten salt have been determined at 175–350 °C for oxidation films on zirconium alloys. An aqueous electrochemical method determined the nature of the oxide layers over the intermetallic precipitates (the sites of electronic conduction through the oxides). For oxides formed on Zircaloy-2 in low oxygen environments electronic conduction occurs by Schottky emission or Poole-Frenkel excitation through a thin ZrO2 layer over the intermetallic precipitates. For oxides formed in oxygenated environments the ZrO2 layer is doped with iron (and chromium or nickel) contributing an additional ohmic component of conduction. Under some conditions in molten salt and in 300 °C water containing ferrous hydroxide a layer of magnetite about 50 A thick forms over the doped ZrO2 and the resistance of the oxide drops by ca. 100 with conduction occurring by a double injection mechanism. These results are discussed in relation to the in-reactor enhancement of the oxidation rate of Zircaloy-2 in aqueous environments containing oxygen." @default.
