- W1978587411 abstract "Motivated by the floating-zone technique for bulk crystal growth we use a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to analyse the capillary instability of a rigidly rotating cylindrical fluid column subject to a uniform axial magnetic field. A general analytical solution to the linearized problem is presented and the existing results in the literature recovered in appropriate special cases. Sufficient, and in all but one case also necessary, conditions for linear stability are obtained for static and rigidly rotating columns of both inviscid and viscous fluid. In an appendix the leading-order terms in the asymptotic expansion of the temporal growth rate for high fluid resistivity are derived for both inviscid and viscous fluid columns in a number of special cases." @default.
