- W1978825285 abstract "Eight studies describe the development of an apparatus for investigating odor detection and its use in measuring changes in performance associated with various hormonal states. The central aims were to establish the existence and magnitude of these changes and to identify hormones involved and their possible sites of action. Male and four-day cyclic female Long Evans rats were trained to detect odors delivered from an air dilution olfactometer. Females, but not males, showed cyclicity in performance nonspecific to the odor (cyclopentanenone, eugenol, α-ionone and Exaltolide) and maximal around ovulation. The changes correspond with known fluxes in rat plasma concentrations of estrogen and progesterone. Induction of pseudopregnancy or ovariectomy of cyclic females eliminated these fluctuations. Performance scores of ovariectomized rats were higher than those of pseudopregnant or normal females not in ovulation as determined by vaginal smears. Androgen treated ovariectomized rats showed a significant dose-dependent increase to performance levels comparable or superior to that of normal males. Odor detection in rats is thus markedly influenced by circulating levels of certain hormones. The effects may originate at one or more of numerous potential sites." @default.
