Meaningful patent protection for such inventions is the desire of the inventors; a full disclosure in return for the patent grant is the price the inventors must pay. Whether or not patent protection for such inventions is indeed meaningful, after the inventors have paid the price, is open to debate in some countries. Because of some countries' disclosure requirements and practices, it appears that for certain microbiological inventions the better protection is trade secret rather than patents. A proper merging of scientific and legal principles is vitally needed to promote public disclosure of the many inventions being made in the microbial genetic research area." @default.
