• W1979062893 abstract "When heated with excess (Fe, Ni) monosulfide and graphite in a sealed silica glass tube at 1200°C, Mg-rich olivine (Fo90) is sulfidized to niningerite [(Mg, Fe)S] and clinoenstatite by the reaction: Mg2SiO4 + 12S2 + C = MgSiO3 + MgS + CO. Minor amounts of (Fe, Ni) suicides and silicon Sulfides are also produced. The distribution coefficient for Ni/Fe exchange between (Mg, Fe)S and (Fe, Ni)S is about 24 and is significantly greater than that for coexisting niningerite and troilite in EH enstatite chondrites. Experimental studies in the Ni-free system, at both subsolidus and liquid iron sulfide temperatures, are in good overall agreement with the calculated phase relations for niningerite. The quenched experimental assemblage (clinoenstatite + troilite + niningerite + alloy + suicide + graphite) is equivalent to the reduced mineral assemblage of EH enstatite chondrites. The present phase relations suggest that niningerite in EH chondrites could have been produced by sulfidation of Mg-rich silicates during either accretion or metamorphism at low fugacities of CO. However, niningerite is not stable under the anticipated conditions of recrystallization of EL enstatite chondrites. The assemblage (olivine + graphite + pyrrhotite) is unstable under magmatic conditions at low and moderate crustal pressures." @default.
