- W1979070201 abstract "Bert Richard Johannes Bolin was born on 15 May 1925 in Nykoping, Sweden. He died on 30 December 2007 in Stockholm. Both his parents were teachers. His father, Richard Bolin, was very interested in weather phenomena, and he inspired Bert Bolin to study meteorology after he finished school. His father took him to the headquarters of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute in 1942 and discussed the prospects for the young man with Dr. Anders Angstrom, the deputy Director. The following year, Bolin began studying mathematics and physics at the University of Uppsala and also attended Professor Hilding Kohler's lectures in meteorology. After his BSc degree in 1946, Bolin moved to Stockholm. This publication is part of a Thematic Cluster with papers presented at a conference held in Stockholm 21 - 23 May 2012, to honor the late Professor Bert Bolin for his outstanding contributions to climate science and his efforts to create a dialogue between policy makers and the scientific community. All papers within the cluster will be published online as soon as they have been accepted for publication. When all papers belonging to the cluster have been published, they will be summarized with a foreword describing the background and scope of the conference.
