- W1979157057 abstract "Hungarian planners have always been concerned with keeping in contact with the international trends of urban and regional planning. Studies of planning documents and analytical material, however, had little influence on the Hungarian planning process as long as the overall social context was fundamentally different from that elsewhere in Europe. Now, the need to learn and adopt the European planning systems and approaches has become an urgent actuality, and it is now that we experience the difficulty of giving up the outdated and customary approaches. The principles of contemporary planning are associated with sustainable development. This concept implies a commitment to facilitate much-needed development and to strike the right balance between that development and the interests of conservation. Thus planning is not a regulatory tool for preventing or restricting change, but, properly used, it can help to secure economy, efficiency and amenity in the development and use of land. The implementation of these generally accepted principles would involve appropriate legislative changes, as well as changes in the process of planning, the approach to planning problems, and in the structure and activity of planning organizations. Examples are presented of new planning approaches needed and emerging in Hungary under the impact of the contemporary processes and challenges. The topics to be considered are related to green belt policies, urban renewal actions, partnership schemes, public participation and the interrelationships of planning and management." @default.
