- W1979182544 abstract "Prevention of osteoporosis should begin in childhood since approximately 90% of adult bone mass is established by age 17. During childhood, skeletal loading in the form of exercise positively affects bone mineral density (BMD), but it is unknown what amount or type of physical activity is necessary to maximize peak bone mass. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to compare BMD of 144 fourth-grade students (73 boys, 71 girls) grouped according to their total level of physical activity and a subset of bone-loading activities. Mean (± SD) height, weight, and age of the students were 137.8 ± 7.9 cm, 36.8 ± 11.2 kg, and 9.6 ± 0.9 years, respectively. BMD was assessed using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (Lunar DPX). A questionnaire was administered to assess level of physical activity outside of school. In addition, the amount of time spent in bone-loading activities was examined. One-way ANOVA was used to determine group differences in BMD. There was no significant difference in BMD when students were grouped based on bone-loading activities. However, when grouped based on the median value for total physical activity (high ≥ 154 min/wk; low < 154 min/wk), the high physical activity group had significantly higher BMD (g/cm2 at the femoral neck (0.818 ± 0.102 vs. 0.781 ± 0.078), Ward's (0.821 ± 0.124 vs. 0.771 ± 0.096), greater trochanter (0.689 ± 0.095 vs. 0.644 ± 0.074), femoral shaft (0.892 ± 0.113 vs. 0.839 ± 0.093), total proximal femur (0.819 ± 0.099 vs. 0.773 ± 0.079), leg (0.896 ± 0.094 vs. 0.861 ± 0.079), and arm (0.655 ± 0.052 vs. 0.635 ± 0.051) (p < .05). In conclusion, this data suggests that physical activity is an important determinant of bone mass acquisition. Supported by NIH Grant no. R01 HD36616–03." @default.
