- W1979455499 abstract "Spanish Kids Got No Books? Peter F. Neumeyer (bio) (Editors Note: Since the work of any committee inevitably involves compromise, I asked individual members of the Canon Committe to comment on the list that the group as a whole produced. This is one such comment. We invite other comments on the canon from readers of the Quarterly, in the hope that continuing debate over which books are, indeed, the ones everyone ought to know will stimulate and enrich discussion of all aspects of children's literature. Copies of the canon are available for $2.00 each from ChLA Publications, Education Department, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907.) I volunteered for the committee designing a canon. But now I'm disillusioned. The initial idea of folks interested in children's books helping each other be aware of what exists is collegial and commendable. Nor is there any reason to get heated about the omission or about the inclusion of a book that may or may not please us. But the very word canon has become offensive. It implies a sacredness and authority and inevitability that none of my friends on the Committee would seriously claim for themselves or their choices. Moreover, the idea of stopping the list at 1970 seems arbitrary. One could stop just as easily at 1900, which is a good, round number, or at the time of the list's publication—a real, rather than a theoretical date. The term Worth Watching seems to me condescending when applied to Virginia Hamilton or Peter Spier. Why is Spier worth watching, while Ezra Keats is of the canon? (Or the worth watching Edward Ardizzone, of whom we should expect, perhaps, posthumous improvements?) The singling out of Dunning's anthology (omitting De La Mare's Come Hither, just for example) seems absurd. The rationale for the specific translations chosen, I'd like to see. Was it really an informed and comparatively made decision that puts Keigwin's translation of Andersen over Haugaard's? Finally, the list is preposterously Anglo-Saxon. When we happen to know a foreigner, we include her. But my guess is that our collective linguistic ignorance has been crippling. We include Pinnochio, but not Struwwelpeter. On what basis? What reationale? If you want to know where generations of Germans have come from, what tickles the Teutonic infant, you've got to read Struwwelpeter and Max & Moritz, watch Paulinchen (Harriet) go up in flames; see the naughty boys baked in the oven. While the canon debacle wasn't premeditated, the makeup of the Committee tells where the problem lies. I see no Slavic name, nor an Oriental. What do French children grow up reading? Finns? Swedes? Spanish kids got no books? But perhaps the ill-named canon has done us a service. It points up our parochial myopia. And if now we recognize that fact, and resolve to inform ourselves and each other, to help ourselves learn more, open our eyes to see where we have been blind, then we're OK. Just don't let's display our hubris and our collective ignorance by publishing what we've done as a canon. [End Page 35] Peter F. Neumeyer Peter F.
