- W1979573332 abstract "Vibration-decay measurements were performed on a riveted and on a spot-welded joint taken from an actual aircraft. The effects of a number of joint modifications were investigated in an attempt to discover the primary energy-dissipation mechanisms. The damping observed was surprisingly linear. Spot welds, rivets, and tight bolts were found to produce very similar damping characteristics. Increased gross interface contact area, looser or fewer connectors, and the addition of low-viscosity lubricants or rubbery adhesives were observed to produce increased damping. Use of rigid adhesives resulted in decreased damping. It appears that energy dissipation is not associated with the structure in the immediate vicinity of rivets or other connectors. Reduced interface friction seems to result in increased energy dissipation, probably because it permits more relative motion over a larger portion of the interface area.
