• W1979577497 abstract "Unawareness of memory deficits and psychosis or disturbed behavior is not uncommon and often leads to poorer outcome. However, its correlates have been pay adequate attention. Fifty-five participants with AD were enrolled. Unawareness of memory deficits and unawareness of psychosis or disturbed behavior were assessed separately. Rating scale of unawareness of deficits was de rived from previous works of Verhey and his colleagues (1993) based on a 4-liker score. Participants were grouped into full awareness and unawareness of deficits. Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) and Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD) were used to measure apathy and depression symptoms respectively. The Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was used for assessment of cognitive function in this study as a covariate. Thirty-two (57.2%) participants were identified as unawareness of memory deficits, and twenty-seven (49.1%) were unawareness of psychosis or disturbed behavior. Controlled logistic regression analyses were conducted to adjust for the confounding effects of significant variables of univariate analyses. The logistic regression analysis for unawareness of memory deficits revealed that female gender (OR = 8.53), older age (OR = 1.15), lower score of MMSE (OR = 1.35) increased risk of unawareness of memory deficits, while higher score of CSDD (OR = 0.74) reduced the risk. Similar logistic regression analysis was carried out for unawareness of psychosis or disturbed behavior, the same risk factors were female gender (OR = 6.23), older age (OR = 1.09), and lower score of MMSE (OR = 1.18). Our findings supported unawareness of deficits was prevalent among AD. Female gender, older age, and severer cognitive deficits shared the common risks for both unawareness of memory deficits and psychosis or disturbed behavior. The more depressed, the more aware of memory deficits. Apathy was not associated with unawareness of deficits." @default.
