- W1979642502 abstract "Abstract Thin films of Au, Cu, Ag and Ni were irradiated in the VVRS reactor and the structure before and after irradiation was examined by electron diffraction or by electron microscopy. The neutron doses were in the range of 1017 nvt to 1018 nvt. The films were deposited on glass and quartz substrates as well as on copper and nickel grids and were irradiated in evacuated phials or in phials filled with oxygen or inert gases. As a result of irradiating in vacuum or inert gases thin films of Au on Cu grids, different alloys such as AuCu and AuCu3 were formed. No alloys were observed on thin films deposited on Ni grids. Radiation effects in thin films irradiated in oxygen resulted in a thorough oxidation associated with the phenomenon of alloy formation for the thin films deposited on Cu grid. By irradiating Cu, Ag and Ni films, diffraction patterns of Cu2O, CuO and (CuO)', AgO, Ag2O3 and NiO were formed. By irradiating Au films on Cu and Ni grids, different diffraction patterns very similar to those observed by Shishakov were observed. These may arise from the oxidation of impurities either in the specimens or in the grid. Some order-disorder phenomena were also observed : a hexagonal structure of Ni, the colloidal form of Au as reported elsewhere and a hexagonal structure of Ag, very similar to the structure reported by Boublick. The order-disorder and the alloy formation mechanisms may be due to enhanced diffusion associated with thermal spike phenomena as a result of irradiation." @default.
