- W1979766063 abstract "Asthmatic patients have many effective medications, but often the patient has not been taught how to takeover and control his asthma. Home monitoring by peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) improves the management of asthma (1,2). The topic has been the subject of recent major reviews in both the United States (3,4) and the United Kingdom (5). The variables derived from forced expiration have become a rapid and easy way to assess the amount of airway obstruction. There is much evidence that peak flow measurements can easily and reliably provide patients and their doctors with objective information about changes in pulmonary obstruction (6). In the U.K. peak flow meters have been available on prescription since 1990. In the Guidelines for the Management of Asthma, whether chronic or acute severe in adults (7,8), it is suggested that it is mandatory to gauge the severity of asthma by the use of peak flow meters. Since we have several inexpensive peak flow meters available for patients’ use, it was decided to evaluate the new Wright Pocket Peak Flow Meter against the mini Wright peak flow meter. There have been impressions from some observers that inexpensive peak flow meters are not accurate for" @default.
