- W1979866010 abstract "The properties of porcine lactate dehydrogenase (L-lactate: NAD oxido-reductase, EC 1.1.1.27) have been studied throughout the period of embryonic development and maturation in order to contribute towards a fuller understanding of the control of synthesis of this enzyme during the establishment of tissue identity. The data presented confirm the tissue specificity of the isoenzyme distributions in this animal, but point to differences from the zymograms originally reported for adult diaphragm and skeletal muscle. The significance of these differences is discussed. In some adult tissues the intermediate isoenzyme (lactate dehydrogenase 3) is present in greatest abundance, demonstrating that this form is not characteristic of embryonic tissues a.s previously suggested. The manner in which this more comprehensive developmental information necessitates modification of the conclusions of earlier workers is considered. In particular, it is demonstrated that there is no substantial basis for the assumption that the early embryonic enzyme in the pig is the A-type tetramer. In addition, the involvement of oxygen in the epigenetic control of lactate dehydrogenase synthesis is indicated as indirect. An alternative explanation of the biosynthesis of this enzyme, consonant both with the experimental data and with current views on the regulation of enzyme synthesis, is suggested." @default.
