- W1979869306 abstract "One need not search long in the field of curricujum development to identify many urgent problems which call for solution. Certain of these problems, because they have been neglected during recent years, are more acute than others and would therefore seem to merit prompt attention. In this category must certainly be included problems relating to sequence and grade placement. It is the purpose of this article to explore briefly these problems and to examine research pertinent thereto. At the outset one quite naturally inquires, and grade place ment of what? An answer to that question will depend largely on one's conception of the curriculum. As currently defined by many educators, the curriculum includes all the experiences which children and youth have under the direction of the school. Now this is not a self-explanatory definition, for of course all schools provide experiences for their students. The crucial considerations are the kind and the quality of the experiences undergone. In some schools experiences are largely limited to mastering bodies of logically organized subject matter. In other schools, experiences are organized around problems faced in personal living and significant social problems as these impinge directly on the lives of children and youth. Sequence in the first example is essentially a matter of deciding, experi mentally or otherwise, in what order subjects and topics within subjects are to be studied. Grade placement is concerned with deciding at what points in the school program the various subjects and skills should be introduced to the learner. Continuity is thus sought through systematic study of special ized fields of knowledge such as history, geography, and the like. It is assumed that the basic continuity lies within the subject field, entirely out side the learner. In contrast, continuity and sequence in the second example are to be found in the ongoing experiences of boys and girls in their progress toward the accepted goals of education. Here the emphasis is placed on the percep tion of interrelationships between experiences and the development of gen 610" @default.
