- W1979899447 abstract "2092 Most studies evaluating the energy expenditure requirements of common daily activities have been conducted on younger adults relatively free of disease. In older adults, it is possible that the presence of multiple comorbidities (CMD) leads to a reduction in efficiency, either biomechanical or physiological, in the performance of routine activities. This may result in increased energy requirements for a given physical activity. PURPOSE: We examined the effect of comorbidity on the energy expenditure of common physical activities in older, habitually exercising adults with multiple CMD. METHODS Nineteen adults (ages 55–83, 76% male) reported for exercise on two separate days. Energy expenditure was measured using a portable COSMEDk4B2 for treadmill walking at 1.7 mph and 2.5 mph and stationary cycling at 35rpm and 45 rpm. Exercise intensity was set low so all participants could complete the required tasks. We assessed CMD by self-report using the Older Americans Resources and Services comorbidity index. RESULTS: Average number of CMD = 6.1. Comparisons of energy expenditure are below:TableCONCLUSION: Even among habitual exercisers, multiple comorbidities may influence the Met requirements for common activities, such that higher multiples of resting energy expenditure is required for common exercises. Exercise prescriptions for older adults with multiple CMD should reflect these differences in Met requirements. Supported by VA E2788-RA and NIH #5 P60 AG 11268" @default.
