• W1979960907 abstract "SUMMARY The principles of an echoventriculographic method for the estimation of the width of the supratentorial ventricular system in hydrocephalic infants and children with atrioventricular shunts are discussed. A total of 143 echoventriculographic investigations were performed pre-and postoperatively on 28 infants and children. In the ‘functioning’ shunt group of 18 cases, a highly-significant decrease in the width of the bodies of the lateral ventricles was shown to occur postoperatively. The ‘dysfunctioning’ shunt group of 10 cases was operated upon twice. The difference in the mean of the last individual index values before and after the first operation was statistically not significant; neither was the difference between the last individual mean index values before and after the second operation. However, the difference between the last individual pre-operative mean value (0–64) before the first operation and the last individual postoperative mean value (0–49) after the second operation was statistically significant, although not so evident as in the functioning shunt group. The mean of the last individual head circumference values before and after the operations in both groups was about 2 cm. higher than normal. The head circumferences increased more slowly postoperatively than they had pre-operatively. RÉSUMÉ L'auteur décrit une méthode pour évaluer la largeur du systeme ventriculaire supratentorial chez les enfants hydrocéphaliques avec des shunts. Un total de 143 examens par echoventriculographie ont étééffectués avant et après l'opération chez un groupe de 28 enfants. Dans le groupe avec des shunt ‘fonctionnant’ comprenet 18 cas, on a observe une diminution très significative de la largeur des corps des ventricules latéraux survenant après l'opération. Le groupe avec des shunts ‘fonctionnant mal’ comprenant 10 cas a subi une opération deux fois. La différence dans la moyenne des valeurs du dernier index individuel avant et après la premiere opération n'avait pas de signification statistique, pas plus que la différence dans les valeurs moyennes du dernier index avant et après la seconde opération. Pourtant, la différence entre la valeur post-opératoire (0,49) et la valeur pré-opératoire (0,64) avait une valeur significative, mais moins évidente que dans le groupe avec les shunts fonctionnant. La moyenne des dernières valeurs individuelles de circonférence de la tête avant et après l'opération dans les deux groupes était environ 2 cm de plus que la normale. Les circonférences de la tête augmentaient plus lentement après l'opération qu'avant l'opération. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Eine MeAthode zur Berechung der Weite des supratentorialen, ventrikulären Systems bei hydrocephalischen Kindern mit Shunts, wird beschrieben. Insgesamt wurden 143 echoventrikulographische, prä-und postoperative Untersuchungen an einer Gruppe von 28 Kindern vorgenommen. Bei der ‘funktionierenden’ Shuntgruppe von 18 Kindern, stellte sich heraus, dass eine hochbedeutende postoperative Abnahme in der Körperweite der lateralen Ventrikeln stattfand. An den 10 Kindern der ‘funktionsgestörten’ Shuntgruppe wurde zweimal operiert. Der durchschnittliche Unterschied zwischen den letzten einzelnen Index-Werten vor und nach der ersten Operation war statistisch nicht bedeutend; sowenig als auch der Unterschied zwischen den letzten durchschnittlichen Index-Werten vor und nach der zweiten Operation. Jedoch war der Unterschied zwischen dem präoperativen Wert (0–64) und dem postoperativen Wert (0–49) statistisch bedeutend, obgleich nicht so eindeutig als bei der funktionierenden Shuntgruppe. Der Durchschnitt der letzten einzelnen Umfangswerte vor und nach den Operationen, in beiden Gruppen, lag ungefähr 2 cm über dem Normalmass. Die Kopfumfangsmasse erhöhten sich postoperativ langsamer als präoperativ." @default.
