Nonoccupational postexposure HIV prevention: emergency physicians' current practices, attitudes, and beliefs. Ann Emerg Med. 2003; 42: 651-656 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (18) Google Scholar give us a window into the experience, knowledge, and attitudes of emergency physicians concerning nonoccupational HIV postexposure prophylaxis. The practices of these physicians reflect the dominant national policies concerning this often-controversial subject. Emergency physicians surveyed in this study have routinely offered HIV postexposure prophylaxis after occupational exposure but have offered postexposure prophylaxis less often after sexual assault and even less often after consensual exposures such as unsafe sexual practices or exposure after injection drug use. This stratification of offering HIV postexposure prophylaxis is inversely proportional to the numbers of new infections caused by exposure type in the United States. 2 HIV/AIDS surveillance report.
