• W1980050811 abstract "<b>Evaluating the efficacy of omalizumab in severe persistent asthma patients</b> <b>Introduction:</b> In recent years Omalizumab has changed the paradigm of severe persistent asthma, with studies showing its efficacy in achieving better asthma control than previous therapies. <b>Aims and Objectives:</b> Evaluate the efficacy of Omalizumab therapy in patients with severe persistent asthma, in multiple aspects of the disease. <b>Methods:</b> Observational and retrospective study of the clinical records of adult patients followed in a severe asthma medical appointment in terms of asthma control, need for relief medication, systemic corticosteroids use and lung function in tree time periods: previously to Omalizumab, one year after Omalizumab and their present status with Omalizumab. <b>Results:</b> The total number of patients was 15 (12 female) with an average age of 51 years. ACT (Asthma Control Test) average score improved 63.11 % (12.2 to 19.9) one year after Omalizumab and 70.49% by now (12.2 to 20.8). Average FEV1 improved 33.6 % (54.7 % to 73.1 %) one year after Omalizumab and 29.25 % (54.7 % to 70.7 %) by now; average PEF improved 44.9 % (237.1 ml to 343.6 ml) one year after Omalizumab and 38.1 % (237.1 ml to 327.50 ml) by now. Before Omalizumab all patients used systemic corticosteroids (20% always and 46.7% on a monthly basis) and 1 year after, 66.7 % stopped them. The anti-IgE therapy also reduced the need for relief medication. Before Omalizumab, all patients needed relief medication (60% in a daily basis) and 1 year after, 40% stopped using them. <b>Conclusions:</b> The results show Omalizumab as a disease modifying therapy as it enables control of asthma in a previously uncontrolled population, reducing the need for systemic corticosteroids." @default.
