- W1980087341 abstract "Walking to and from school provides a convenient opportunity for students to increase daily physical activity. Investigate the correlations between commuting modes and physical activity levels are essential in youth. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between physical activity levels and habitual walking to and from school in adolescents. METHODS: Subjects were 311 (142 males and 169 females, 13.19±0.31 yrs) 7-grade students of Ta-Kuan Junior High School in Taipei County, Taiwan. Written informed consent was obtained from each participant and one parent. Physical activity was measured using short self-administration version of International Physical Activity Questionnaire Taiwan version. Weekly time spent in moderate and vigorous physical activity (MVPA) was used to assess physical activity levels. For better understanding of the correlates of walking habit and intentional physical activity, walking for transportation was not included in MVPA. Self-reported commuting modes to and from school were collected using a questionnaire designed by the investigators. Cyclers were excluded in this study since only a few students (less than 5%) cycled to school. Weekly time spent in walking to and from school on school days was calculated for comparison. For those students who walked less than 50 minutes a week (less than 10 minutes per day in average) were classified as non-frequent walkers. Group medians were used for the comparisons of MVPA among frequent walkers and non-frequent walkers. RESULTS: In this study, 13.8 % were passive commuters who did not walk to and from school at all in school days. Prevalence was higher in females (15.4%) than in males (12.0%). More non-frequent walkers were found in males (23.2%) than in females (20.7%). In medians, males spent 212.5 min/wk in MVPA when females spent nearly half of the time (120.0 min/wk). Time spent on MVPA were 20 minutes less in non-frequent walkers compared with frequent walkers in both genders (200.0 min/wk versus 220.0 min/wk in males and 100 min/wk versus 120 min/wk in females). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that adolescents who walked to and from school frequently were likely to have more intentional physical activity than non-frequent walkers." @default.
