- W1980147648 abstract "3 letters discussing interpretation of changes in the uterine cervix are presented. H.M. Kent notes that the changes of the gross appearance of the cervix from the young patient to the postmenopausal patient have been seen in cervical-cytology clinics. In patients on oral contraceptives the site of the squamocolumnar junction changes as they exposed columnar epithelium either slowly regresses and disappears into the endocervix or becomes altered in appearance by the development of an atypical transformation zone. N.B. Atkin and M.C. Baker note that in the original article (May 3 p. 927) no mention was made of chromosome changes in diagonosing premalignant lesions of the cervix uteri. In most if not all intraepithelial carcinomas of the cervix there is evidence that aneuploidy is present and is also found in equivocal lesions designated as dysplasia of atypia. Preinvasive lesions do not appear to show the same tendency toward a reduction in the proportion of chromosomes in the B D and G groups that is found in invasive lesions. Preinvasive and invasive lesions in general may be distinguished by their karotypes with some degree of probability. M.S.N. Murthy emphasizes the importance of evaluating the epithelial changes in the cervical mucosa without being influenced by the florid squamous columnar prosoplasia and atypical superficial glandular hyperplasia and endocervical mucoid epithelium to help understand the difference between squamous metaplasia and squamous cell carcinoma in situ." @default.
