- W1980200099 abstract "Summary Uptake of xylem-mobile defenuron, ambimobile N-(p-carboxyphenyl)-N'-methylurea (CPMU) and maleic hydrazide (MH) into isolated conducting tissue was investigated. Linear concentration dependence of absorption as well as low Q 10 values indicate entrance by diffusion. The acidic derivatives CPMU and MH were absorbed in strong correlation to the proton concentration in the external solution. Maximum observed uptake was between 3.5—4.0 and 4.0—5.0 respectively. The time course their influx and efflux inhibits a moderate adjustment of the steady state in contrast to a quick one of defenuron. The results revealed a limited retention of ambimobile substances in the symplast of isolated conducting tissue, which is accomplished by ion trapping and corresponds to their presence in the sieve tubes during translocation from source to sink. The effect of uncouplers (carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazone, 2,4-dinitrophenol) seems to be determined by the attainable accumulation of the trapped substances in the symplast under experimental conditions. Thus CPMU uptake is slightly and MH uptake significantly inhibited. Defenuron entrance is not affected by the presence of the inhibitors in the external solution. Ion trapping of ambimobile acidic substances depends on the ratio of dissociated and undissociated compounds at different proton concentrations in the apoplast and symplast, on their lipophilic or hydrophilic properties and on the velocity of penetration through cell membranes. The results presented here confirm the hypothesis that ion trapping causes retention and transport of xenobiotics in the phloem by experimental proofs on a cellular level." @default.
