- W1980216244 abstract "A colonial, nutritionally normal, spontaneous mutant of Neurospora, named black, has been isolated. It produces melanin to a far greater extent than its parent strain or any wild type. The phenotype black is due to a single gene mutation; the gene is close to the centromere of the sex chromosome. An analysis is made of the mode of action of the gene; increased melanogenesis is satisfactorily explained by the increased tyrosinase activity found in the mutant. But it could not be decided whether the increased activity is due to the presence of a larger amount of enzyme or to a block in the synthesis of a tyrosinase inhibitor normally produced by the mold. It is shown, however, that the block can be at most only partial. Tyrosinase activity is not detected in Neurospora during its early growth; this activity may be a short-lived phenomenon if an excess of substrate is available to the enzyme. Visible light, mainly blue-violet light, applied during the growth of the mutant, depresses both melanogenesis and tyrosinase activity in the mycelium. This light effect seems not to be mediated by the action of a tyrosinase inhibitor. Light is therefore believed to induce either a decreased production or an inactivation of the enzyme." @default.
