- W1980299989 abstract "The oxidation of sulphur dioxide dissolved in 0·5 M H2SO4 on a stationary gold electrode was studied by the method of cyclic voltametry. The rate of this reaction strongly depends upon the electrochemical pretreatment of the electrode directly in the SO2 solution. This effect is connected with the fact that SO2 is reduced on the gold at potentials more negative than +0·4 V (vs he), with formation of two different forms of adsorbed “reduced SO2”, apparently adsorbed sulphur and H2S. In the absence of adsorbed “reduced SO2” on the surface of the gold electrode SO2 is adsorbed and is manifested by an adsorption post-peak, following the diffusion SO2 oxidation peak. The amount of adsorbed SO2 corresponds to the Temkin or Frumkin isotherm in the SO2 concentration range, 10−5 – 10−3 M. In the presence of adsorbed “reduced SO2” the adsorption post-peak of SO2 oxidation disappears and the SO2 adsorption can no longer be detected. On the basis of the assumption that there exist two forms of adsorbed SO2, differing in the adsorption strength, the effect of the presence of adsorbed “reduced SO2” on the Au electrode surface and the mechanism of the SO2 oxidation were discussed. The quantitative results can be explained by the assumption that the primary product of the two-electron oxidation of adsorbed SO2 is converted into H2SO4 by very rapid reaction with water." @default.
