The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), which was initiated through the Department of Veterans Affairs and has continued through the American College of Surgeons (ACS), has sought to improve the quality of surgical care for approximately 20 years by providing hospitals with risk-adjusted outcomes allowing for external benchmarking. This article discusses the evolution of the program, key elements to quality improvement, the success of the ACS NSQIP, as well as cost and health policy considerations for future quality improvement endeavors.
