- W1980476485 abstract "ObjectivePrevious studies in women <40 have demonstrated that a positive pregnancy test in an early IVF cycle is a predictor of successful achievement of livebirth in a subsequent cycle. The purpose of this study was to explore whether this trend also exists for women over age 40.DesignRetrospective Data Analysis.Materials and methodsOur database identified 584 women who underwent their first IVF cycle at Boston IVF at age 40 and above between January 1st 1995 and December 31st2000. We reviewed all subsequent cycles in these 584 women, for a total of 1470 IVF cycles. Only cycles utilizing the women's own oocytes were included. A positive hCG was defined as a rising level that attained a value of at least 100 IU/L. Cancelled cycles were excluded. Once a women achieved a livebirth, none of her subsequent cycles were analyzed.ResultsWhen comparing women who had a positive hCG in their first cycle vs. those that had a negative hCG, 18.0% vs. 21.9% subsequently had a successful delivery (P=NS). There were no deliveries after cycle 4 among the 8% of women with a +hCG in their first cycle, and no deliveries after cycle 6 in the 82% of women that had a -hCG in their first cycle. Finally, 9.8% of women t(n=57) had a delivery resulting from their first cycle. Only 9% of these participants had a second cycle, 40% (2/5) of whom had a subsequent delivery.Table 1: Chance of delivery in subsequent cycles based on first cycle outcome *all women in this group had an ectopic pregnancy, a chemical pregnancy, a spontaneous or a therapeutic abortionTable 2: Outcomes of subsequent cycles based on first cycle outcome Table 3: Subsequent Deliveries Per Cycle Based on First Cycle OutcomeConclusionView Large Image Figure ViewerDownload Hi-res image Download (PPT)View Large Image Figure ViewerDownload Hi-res image Download (PPT) ObjectivePrevious studies in women <40 have demonstrated that a positive pregnancy test in an early IVF cycle is a predictor of successful achievement of livebirth in a subsequent cycle.
