- W1980483917 abstract "Abstract Recordings were made from single units in the posterior suprasylvian gyrus of anesthetized, paralyzed cats and their responses to various sensory stimuli were studied. The majority of units was situated along the descending limb of the suprasylvian gyrus in cortex, designated posterior suprasylvian cortex, or areas 20 and 21. Responsive units could be driven by visual stimuli, but auditory and tactile stimulation proved ineffective. Many types of visual stimuli, such as diffuse light, slits, dark bars, or edges evoked powerful responses from neurons of the posterior suprasylvian cortex. Half of the cells showed orientation and direction specificity; the remainder did not. For many neurons visual receptive fields could be plotted. These fields were usually large, often as large as the 67 × 67° tangent screen. About half the receptive fields were bilateral, and some cells displayed unusual response characteristics, different from those of units found in other cortical visual regions. The results concur with studies suggesting that posterior suprasylvian cortex is a cortical visual association region many synapses removed from striate cortex. The data also suggest that posterior suprasylvian cortex may be analogous to inferotemporal cortex of the macaque." @default.
