- W1980496525 abstract "A zoological classification system gives order to a cultural system's animal inventory. As aspects of that inventory change over time (e.g., through the introduction of new animals into an area), the classification system will adjust to take account of the new circumstances. Leviticus 11 contains the most extensive classification system in the Israelite textual record, and consists of several sections, including the dietary laws of Lev 11,2–23 and the carcass laws of Lev 11,24–40. One of the carcass laws, Lev 11,26, refers to Hoofed High-Carriage Land Animals that have Non-Cloven Hoofs and are Non-Ruminants (e.g., donkeys, horses, and mules), a grouping of animals that was not established in Israelite zoological thought when the dietary laws were first being formulated. This taxon was probably established during the early Monarchical Period to give cognitive order to the new socio-zoological situation that was then emerging in Israelite society, a situation characterized by the integration of horses and mules into the community at that time. This suggests that some form of the carcass law found in Lev 11,26, and perhaps all of the carcass laws, was in use as early as the early Monarchical Period." @default.
