This predicts a decrease in the excitation energy relative to that predicted for the crystal, suggesting ΔE G = 2.5 eV for the melt as against 3.65 eV for the crystal, and implies that one may expect the extensive electronic activity observed in the crystal to continue into the liquid, contradicting recent predictions of no electronic activity in the liquid which led to the conclusion that the observed increase in the thermal conductivity upon melting was due to greatly enhanced heat transfer by internal radiation.
