Thus an exploration of the role of the nurse in ICU serves to highlight many of the current issues in nursing as well as those specific to the topic being examined. The nursing role comprises two elements, namely the unique and the collaborative functions (McFarlane, 1980). In her famous and well received definition Henderson (1979:4) wrote that ‘the unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance ofthose activities contributing to health or its recovery (or to peaceful death) that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will or knowledge. And to do this in such a way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible’. It can be argued that, because of the critical nature of the person’s illness, nursing on ICU often entails more than assistance as the nurse compensates for the patient’s inability to perform the activities in question. The general tenet of’ the definition, however, holds true. The unique function ofthe nurse comprises those areas of her work which she, as an independent practitioner, initiates and controls.
