Hutchings, J. B. ; Crampton, D. ; Cowley, A. P. Abstract Results are presented from medium dispersion, 0.1 phase resolved spectroscopy of AM Her in its low intensity state. The system has not been studied in detail in this state before. The spectrum appears to arise principally from the component stars, rather than in the accreting columns as in the high state. In the white dwarf, Zeeman split Balmer absorptions are seen from which the field strength (13 x 10 to the 6th g) and orientation can be inferred. Absorption lines attributable to the nondegenerate stars yield a possible orbital velocity curve and define the system masses (0.25 solar mass each). Narrow emissions of H, He I, Ca II, and FE II appear to arise in a shock-heated region in a gas stream. The data suggest that the dipole field is nearly aligned along the line of centers of the stars.
