- W1980809591 abstract "Movements of water, sodium and potassium and glycolysis in rat diaphragm on incubation in Ringer-bicarbonate at 37° have been studied. Evidence has been accumulated that the hydration of rat diaphragm, which is regulated aerobically by respiration, under anaerobic conditions is strictly linked with the efficiency of glycolysis. This conclusion is also confirmed by results of experiments in which either respiration (with cyanide) or glycolysis (with iodoacetic acid) were impaired. DNP enhances glycolysis, but at the same time promotes swelling of diaphragm, both aerobically and anaerobically. It is suggested that such an effect of DNP may be related to the ability of this compound to stimulate the adenosine triphosphatase activity. Rises in tissue hydration consist in an intracellular swelling, in that the amount of extracellular water is practically the same in the non-swollen and in the swollen diaphragm. In aerobiosis movements of sodium and potassium in rat diaphragm are supported by energy from respiration. However, when respiration is suppressed, movements of ions against concentration gradients continue for some time, the energy for active transport being supplied by glycolysis." @default.
