- W1980997907 abstract "Abstract Gymnodin, an ichthyotoxin isolated from cultures of the Florida red-tide organism Gymnodinium breve Davis, was purified by gel filtration chromatography (Sephade LH-20 and chloroform). The effect of gymnodin on potassium influx of rabbit erythrocyte suspensions at 37°C was measured using 42 KCl in blood buffer. Relative fluxes (potassium influx for test relative to methanol control) were obtained as a function of the amount of added gymnodin. At the highest concentrations studied (0·4 mg/ml), the relative flux was doubled; with successive dilution of gymnodin, the relative flux decreased and at the lowest dilution studied (10 −5 –10 −6 ) the relative flux was 0·25. A constant concentration of gymnodin (0·4 mg/ml) was used and relative fluxes were determined as a function of the external potassium concentration, [K 0 + ] e , over the range 1–10 mM. Two patterns were observed in the diagnostic plot (relative flux vs log 10 [K 0 + ] e ). The first, a linear increase, was observed for several erythrocytes (human, rabbit and bovine). The second, no variation of flux with external potassium concentration, was observed for genotypically distinct sheep red cells, HK and LK that have high potassium (low sodium) and low potassium (high sodium), respectively." @default.
