- W1981104908 abstract "This year marks the 42nd year of publication of Experimental Hematology, the journal of the International Society of Experimental Hematology. In recognition of our journal's role in documenting progress in the field of experimental hematology over the past 4 decades, we are launching two major initiatives this year. The first of these, beginning in this issue, is a series of feature review articles examining topics of longstanding and current interest to our readership. The review featured this month by Hideo Ema, Yohei Morita, and Toshio Suda is on the topic of heterogeneity and hierarchy of hematopoietic stem cells. Interestingly, the first reference in this review is to a paper published in 1964 by pioneers in the field of hematopoietic stem cell biology and long time contributors to ISEH, James Till and Ernst McCulloch, on the topic of stochastic modeling of stem cell proliferation [1Till J.E. Mcculloch E.A. Siminovitch L. A stochastic model of stem cell proliferation, based on the growth of spleen colony-forming cells.Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1964; 51: 29-36Crossref PubMed Scopus (605) Google Scholar]. Not surprisingly, this topic was also front and center in the first volume of Experimental Hematology in an article by James Till on stochastic models of hematopoiesis [2Korn A.P. Henkelman R.M. Ottensmeyer F.P. Till J.E. Investigations of a stochastic model of haemopoiesis.Exp Hematol. 1973; 1: 362-375PubMed Google Scholar]. Jumping forward 40 years, the review by Ema and his colleagues provides a masterful account of how our notions of hematopoietic stem cells and their regulation continue to change. One suspects that a full understanding may still not be in for some time to come and that hematopoietic stem cell biology will remain front and center in our journal. Forthcoming reviews will touch on other longstanding topics of interest such as MLL as a key regulator in both normal and leukemic hematopoiesis as well as on the topic of early development of the hematopoietic system. I hope you will enjoy this review series and that it stimulates some proud reflection on where our field has been and where the field is going. The second major initiative being launched this year in Experimental Hematology is the publication of two special issues centered on the topics of Genomics and Model Organisms in Experimental Hematology under the guest editorships of Dr. Bertie Gottgens and Dr. David Traver. The first special issue with reviews and orginal articles on both topics is scheduled to appear in August of this year and the second issue, again featuring both topics will appear early in 2015. Again I hope you will enjoy these special issues that look to exciting future developments in our field as we increasingly embrace the power of genomics and model organisms in experimental hematology." @default.
