- W1981122092 abstract "OBJECTIVE: To analyze predictive value of morphological selection criteria on day 3 embryos. DESIGN: Retrospective study of morphological embryo characteristics on day 3 of those blastocysts selected for transfer on day 5. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed 248 blastocysts from patients having transfer on day 5 between January and December of 2009. The analyzed parameters on day 3 included: cell number, fragmentation, symmetry and compaction. Multinucleation, vacuoles and zona pellucida were analyzed during the entire culture. Group 1 included optimal parameters: 8 cells, 0% fragments, symmetric cells, full compaction, no multinucleation or vacuoles and normal zona pellucida. Group 2 included all other characteristics. Implantation and miscarriage rates were calculated excluding mixed embryo transfers with rates different than 0% or 100%. Chi square was applied where appropriate and p<0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: 56,6% of the selected blastocysts for transfer had 8 cells on day 3 whereas 43,4 % had any other cell number, from 4 cells up to more than 12. 41,4% were not fragmented vs 58,6% with 5-20% fragmentation. 40,2% were symmetric vs 59,8% that were not. 34,9% showed compaction vs 65,1% that had no compaction. 93,2% were not multinucleated vs 6,8% that were multinucleated. 90% had no vacuoles vs 10% that presented vacuoles. Finally, 94% presented normal zona pellucida vs 6% with abnormal zona pellucida. No statistical significant differences were observed between groups 1 and 2 in terms of top quality blastocyst formation, implantation and miscarriage rates. CONCLUSION: Blastocysts selected for transfer have the same implantation and miscarriage rates regardless of their quality on day 3, which demonstrates the limited value of embryo selection on day 3. Blastocyst culture adds information of great utility for the embryologist." @default.
