- W1981235145 abstract "Traumatic brain injury, stroke, and subarachnoid hemorrhage remain a significant cause of death and disability. Cerebral ischemia plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of brain injury. Patients with these insults are also at risk for secondary injury from hypoxia and hypotension. The focus of care for these patients is the detection and prevention of secondary insults to the brain. However, standard neuromonitoring is limited to the measurement of intracranial pressure and calculation of cerebral perfusion pressure. Recently, new devices have been developed for the direct monitoring of cerebral oxygenation and metabolism. One of these devices, the brain tissue oxygen monitor, has been gaining acceptance as studies have detailed its ease of use, accuracy, and prognostic value for pathological events. The technical aspects and physiological principles of brain tissue oxygen monitoring are reviewed, and the clinical application of this technology is discussed." @default.
