- W1981692163 abstract "There are two questions an analysis of the perfect has to answer: (i) Is the perfect a tense, an aspect or a combination of both? (ii) Is it possible to give a uniform analysis of the perfect that comprises all its different uses, if there are such different uses? In this paper I will answer the first question in the sense that at least the present perfect in English has both a temporal and an aspectual component. The second question will be answered in the affirmative: it is possible to give a uniform analysis of the different types of perfect. The paper is organized as follows. In section (1) I will survey the evidence for the answer given to the first of the two above questions. In section (2), following Comrie, three different types of perfect will be distinguished. Section (3) surveys three previous analyses of the perfect and my own analysis is introduced. Section (4) contains the formal implementation of the analysis sketched in section (3). The formal analysis given in section (4) applies only to one particular type of perfect, the perfect of result (PR). In section (5) analyses for the other two types, the perfect of persistent situation (PPS) and the experiential perfect (EP), are given" @default.
