- W1982079273 abstract "Linear, donor-controlled models of ecosystems are known to be stable. Predation and browsing can be viewed as “acceptor-controlled” utilization of available resources. The mathematics of such interactions is usually described in terms of non-linear , Lotka-Volterra type formulations, but these do not take into account the laws of conservation of matter and energy, which all ecosystems must clearly obey. These laws are obeyed by linear, donor-controlled ecosystem models; but the role of acceptor-controlled flows of matter or energy has not been explicitly examined before in the context of stable, linear differential or difference—differential equation models of ecosystems. The stability of linear models with acceptor-controlled flows of matter or energy is demonstrated here when these models obey the laws of conservation of matter and energy. The conditions under which such linear models are stable can also be used to describe or assess the neighbourhood stability properties of non-linear models." @default.
