A pesar de los tratamientos existentes, se ha demostrado mediante estudios una alta tasa de recurrencia y deserción del tratamiento instaurado. Es por esto que cobra importancia la Medicina Tradicional China (MTC), que tiene más de 2.000 años. En la actualidad en China tanto la medicina tradicional como la medicina occidental forman parte de los servicios de salud que ofrece el Estado. La teoría en la cual se basa la MTC describe la salud como un equilibrio en la energía del cuerpo. La MTC explica la enfermedad desde la teoría del Yin y el Yang, la teoría de los 5 elementos, los órganos Zang Fu y los canales y colaterales. Actualmente algunos estudios —tanto en Oriente como en Occidente— confirman la veracidad de los antiguos textos acerca de su potencial en el diagnóstico y tratamiento de pacientes en estado depresivo. El enfoque que brinda esta medicina ofrece una mayor adherencia del paciente a su tratamiento; y en consecuencia se reduce la posibilidad de futuras recaídas. Para la MTC, aunque los otros órganos y vísceras también se ven involucrados, los órganos principalmente afectados en los casos de depresión son el Hígado y el Corazón. Con esta revisión se busca brindar un acercamiento claro y conciso desde la MTC al manejo de una patología muy reconocida en Occidente, sin desconocer la importancia del enfoque y manejo desde la medicina alopática. Depression is currently recognized as one of the main public health problems. This disorder has a strong impact on quality of life and generates high costs to the healthcare system. Despite the available treatments, there is a high rate of recurrence and treatment abandonment, increasing the importance of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which goes back more than 2000 years. At present, both TCM and Western medicine form part of the state-provided health services in China. The theory behind TCM describes health as a balance in the body's energy. Disease is explained by theories of Yin-Yang, the five elements, Zang-Fu, and channels-collaterals. Currently, some studies —both in the East and West— have confirmed the veracity of ancient texts on the potential of acupuncture in the diagnosis and treatment of depression. The focus of this therapeutic modality improves patient adherence to treatment and consequently reduces the possibility of future recurrences. For TCM, although the other organs and viscera are also involved, the organs mainly affected in cases of depression are the Liver and Heart. The aim of this review is to provide a clear and concise approach, from the perspective of TCM, to the management of depression, without ignoring the importance of the perspective of allopathic medicine." @default.
