- W1982253993 abstract "I T HAS LONG been recognized that leakage of fetal blood into the maternal circulation can occur tlaroughout pregnancy and particularly at deliverY. The ability to detect such fetomaternal hemorrhage (FMH) and estimate its volume has contributed to the prevention of hemolytic disease of the newborn due to RhD antibodies. 1 Detection of FMH also plays a part in evaluating fetal well-being after maternal trauma, 2 and it has been used, inappropriately, to assist in the diagnosis of placental abruption) The detection and quantitation of FMH is also an important part of the investigation of unexplained fetal hydrops and death at or near term 4 and also of the investigation of severe neonatal anemia. 3 Numerous techniques have been described for detecting fetal cells in the maternal circulation. The skill and expertise required to perform these tests varies, as does the sensitivity of each testing method. Moreover, the interpretation of results obtained differs widely. This review evaluates critically the more commonly used techniques for detecting FMH and also discusses their application in different clinical situations." @default.
