- W1982276543 abstract "The growth and development processes may influence the metabolic and cardiorespiratory responses during exercise. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of the chronological age and biological maturation on the maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), the speed corresponding to the VO2max (Vamax) and its respective time to exhaustion (tlim) in boys aged 10–15 years without a regular training program. METHODS Forty volunteers were divided into groups by chronological age (GC1 n = 20; 11.45 ± 0.63 yr; and GC2 n = 20; 14.1 ± 0.6 yr) and biological maturation (GB1 n = 20; stages 1, 2, 3 and GB2 n = 20; stages 4, 5). VO2max and Vamax were determined using a progressive and intermittent test in a treadmill. One week later, tlim was determined under the same conditions. After 15-min warming up at 60% of Vamax the exercise intensity was increased so that each subject reached his Vamax in 30 s and then continued at that level until he was exhausted. RESULTS There was a significant difference of VO2max (l/min) and Vamax (km/h) between GC1 and GC2 (1.84 ± 0.41 vs. 2.81 ± 0.61; 11.8 ± 1.2 vs. 12.6 ± 1.2, respectively), GB1 and GB2 (1.8 ± 0.37 vs. 2.87 ± 0.56; 12.1 ± 1.2 vs. 12.9 ± 1.1, respectively). There was no significant difference of VO2max (ml/kg/min) between groups (GC1 = 47.9 ± 6.8 vs. GC2 = 50.4 ± 5.5; GB1 = 47.9 ± 6.8 vs. GB2 = 50.3 ± 5.5, respectively) and tlim (GC1 = 181.5 ± 96.3 vs. GC2 = 199.0 ± 105.5 seconds; GB1 = 183.9 ± 96.0 vs. GB2 = 196.5 ± 106.1 seconds). Considering all the subjects, the tlim presented a significant correlation with VO2max (l/min) (r = 0.40) and Vamax (r = −0.51). CONCLUSIONS We can conclude that the Vamax is influenced by the chronological and biological age, probably for the improvement of running economy that occurs with the growth and development, since the VO2max (ml/kg/min) was not different between groups. In this group, the great interindividual variability of tlim (52%) may be explained in part by the VO2max and Vamax values and not by the chronological age or biological maturation." @default.
