The participation of collective and single-particle excitations in the determination of the processes is clarified. The essential role played by collective electronic-density fluctuations as the mediating agent in the energy and momentum conservation for the Coulomb Auger processes is emphasized. The fundamental differences that exist in the physical pictures underlying the Coulomb and exchange Auger processes are brought out in detail by using a diagrammatic formulation of the recombination processes.
