Limiting the aperture to the size of the projected Fresnel zone increases both the image quality and the reliability of amplitudes while significantly decreasing the computational cost. This is especially important for 3D migration. All quantities required for minimum‐aperture Kirchhoff migration can be derived from kinematic wavefield attributes. These attributes can be determined by the Common‐Reflection‐Surface stack method. In addition, the azimuth‐dependent migration velocity can also be expressed in terms of these wavefield attributes. This allows a simple and efficient migration velocity model building.
