- W1983065349 abstract "1. The present results revealed the occurrence of sustained hypoglycemia which showed its maximum during hibernation in both Malpolon monspessulanus and Uromastix aegyptius. A normal blood glucose level was restored in arousing animals. 2. Significant decreases were recorded in the serum pyruvate level in both reptilian species during the different phases of the hibernating cycle. The decrease in pyruvate level might be linked to depressed anaerobic glycolysis during hibernation. 3. Active utilization of hepatic glycogen was observed during hibernation in both animals. The low hepatic glycogen level was retained during arousal reflecting little carbohydrate deposition. The data indicate that the rise in blood glucose in arousing animals, concomitant with the depletion of hepatic glycogen, supports the claim that gluconeogenesis might prevail during arousal. The present study also revealed the occurrence of significant falls in the glycogen content of skeletal muscles in all phases which was more marked in U. aegyptius than in M. monspessulanus. The decrease recorded in the skeletal muscle glycogen supports the decline in glycolytic pathways during dormancy. It is evident that severe glycogenolysis occurred during hibernation in both reptilian species studied in this work. After the depletion of glycogen stores, gluconeogenesis prevailed especially during arousal, being the phase of excessively increasing energy demands." @default.
