- W1983086147 abstract "A growing body of evidence suggests that speech perception is intrinsically related to the mechanism of production. By means of an articulatory synthesizer described in another paper, the perception of the oral‐nasal distinction was explored experimentally. It was chosen because it is achieved by a very simple articulatory maneuver and it is phonologically relevant in virtually every language. The effect of variation in the size of the velo‐pharyngeal port on the perception of oral versus nasal consonants was tested. Two stimulus continua varying in size of velo‐pharyngeal opening were synthesized, one with equal increments of port area and the other with equal increments of velar lowering, ranging from full closure for an English /da/to a large enough opening for an unambiguous /na/. These two syllables formed the end‐points for the two continua, each of which contained nine variants. Native speakers of English were instructed to label randomized presentations of the two continua as either /da/ or /na/. The subjects were also given AXB discrimination tests. The relations between categorization and discrimination data for each of the two continua will be discussed. [Work supported by NSF Grant BNS‐7682023.]" @default.
