Abstract The recent detection of X-rays from SN 1987A by the satellite Ginga coupled with spectroscopic limitations on the velocity of the edge of the helium core based upon data from CTIO strongly constrain the allowed models for the supernova. We have calculated synthetic high-energy spectra resulting from the decay of radioactive ^56^Co for model supernovae defined in a companion paper (Woosley) in order to determine the column depth and possible extent of mixing in the ejecta. These model supernovae are all based upon the explosion of a 6 M_sun_ helium core having explosion energy near 10^51^ ergs and capped by an unknown amount of hydrogen envelope (values 3-10 M_sun_ are explored here). Each synthesized 0.07 M_sun_ of radioactive ^56^Ni. Time-dependent spectra are calculated in the energy range 5 keV-4 MeV using Monte Carlo techniques. Gamma-line light curves and profiles are calculated by direct integration of the transfer equation. When used together with constraints derived from optical observations, we find that some mixing of ^56^Co further out in the ejecta has probably taken place and that the column depth to the center is from 4 to 7 x 10^4^ (10^6^s/t)^2^ g cm^-2^. We thus predict that the 847 keV line flux will reach a peak between 3 and 8 x 10^-4^ photons s^-1^ cm^-2^ at ~400 to 450 days. Gamma rays from the most likely models will be detectable by the most sensitive instruments (at the 2 x 10^-4^ photons s^-1^ cm^-2^ level) beginning at ~250 days (1987 November).
