- W1983266976 abstract "BOOK REVIEWS International Symposium on Society, Medicine, and Law, Jerusalem, March 1972. Edited by H. Karplus. Amsterdam, London, and New York: Elsevier Publishing Co., 1973. Pp. 204. $11.75. Are liberalized abortion laws political and social cop-outs? This symposium will stimulate you to analyze the question for yourself. It not only gives a panoramic background for those interested in the changing structure of United States medicine but also is a prism for those interested in seeing how others view, analyze, and attempt to solve a common problem using different frames of reference. The latter perspective is what makes this compact, well-researched book so valuable to lawyers, politicians, and physicians. This book is a valuable by-product of the International Symposium on Society, Medicine, and Law held in Jerusalem in March 1972. The aim of the symposium was to generate cooperation among a group of scholars interested in the historical development of medicolegal thought in different cultures. To this end the symposium was successful in setting up a center to collect source materials at the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Freiburg University in Freiburg im Breisgau. To garner the necessary wide interest in and base for the center at Freiburg, extremely broad historical, political, legal, social, and medical perspectives were mandatory. Even though the strength of this book lies in its breadth, that breadth has made the editor'sjob of organizing the 20 lectures difficult, and the editor's organization may disconcert the reader until he realizes that each paper will have a radically different historical and social viewpoint. As organized, the book divides itself roughly into five parts. The first part covers the criminal law of the Peruvian Incas, a historical overview of Chinese medical ethics, the civil and criminal liability of the physician in Roman law, and a description of a Greek sheltered community for the handicapped. The second part covers medicine in the Near East and under Moslem and Jewish law. The status of the physician in Moslem law is likely to sober the Western physician. There is no legal distinction to be drawn between the doctor's role and that of the other craftsmen mentioned in the [Ottoman Civil] Code, the wet-nurse, the teacher, the broker, or for that matter, any other person who hires out his services; the rule and regulations of employment of services apply equally to the doctor as to others. Part 3 views forensic, social, and public health medicine in medieval towns and cities. The final paper in this part looks at medical ethics as set forth by the Papal State's chief medical officer, Paola Zacchias, in his Questiones medico-legales, which was printed in 1654 at Rome. Part 4 covers the views of medicine in the Soviet Union, Rumania, and Yugoslavia , while at the same time analyzing the desire for liberalized abortion laws in Yugoslavia, Sweden, and Taiwan. These discussions are quite sobering and remove much of the emotion engendered by the question because the speakers use different frames of reference which they are comfortable with and accustomed to but which most United States readers are unaccustomed to. This section makes the book particularly valuable today. 294 I Book Reviews Within this section Professor Dierkens comes to grips with the sometimes abrasive interface between medicine and law when they square off against each other. One paper in the fifth and final part points out the importance of forensic journalism; the other covers medical innovation. As the editor points out in his introduction, the lectures have been edited to conserve space. Although such editing might have been a drawback, it is not, because the editing was superbly done by cutting out the historical minutiae and keeping each lecturer's main points. This excellent book could have been strengthened if the editor had expanded his introduction and addressed himself to the text and his readers. Because each title reasonably describes the contents of the lecture, some readers may find it more enjoyable or productive to analyze each title and organize their reading to suit their individual needs. The International Symposium on Society, Medicine, and Law ought to be in all medical and law school libraries as well as other major..." @default.
